Our verdict
Both Mistral and Llama 3 represent the best of open-source AI, but they serve slightly different audiences. Mistral is faster, more polished, and available as a managed API, making it ideal for developers who want open-source flexibility without the hassle of self-hosting. Llama 3 is completely free to run locally, making it the top choice for users who need total data privacy and don't mind setting up their own environment. For developer API use, Mistral wins. For private, local inference, Llama 3 is the way to go.

@j3nnif3r_ ollama setup took me 20 min and now I have a free local model running 24/7. it's genuinely wild
llama on ollama is a completely different experience. no subscription, no rate limits, just runs
@synthwave_jo function calling on mistral is also very solid. been building with it for 3 months
voted mistral. the API docs are cleaner and it integrates better with most existing tooling
can't believe how good open source AI has gotten in 2 years. both of these compete with paid frontier models
mistral for production, llama for experiments. that's my exact workflow
@xkurai_91 exactly. if your data can't leave the machine llama is the only real answer
privacy people are going to say llama every time and honestly they're right for that specific case
@lukasz77 mistral large competes with gpt4 at like a third of the cost. the pricing is actually insane
for API use mistral is the obvious choice. price per token is genuinely hard to beat
